The National Transportation Safety Board and Congress want to know if lax regulations on de-icing led to the tragic crash of Continental Flight 3407 in Clarence Center.

Researchers at Calspan tell News 4 Investigative Reporter Luke Moretti that icing is a top priority in aviation research and pilot training.

We know that icing and the use of autopilot in those conditions are among the factors being examined in the crash of Flight 3407 in Clarence Center.

At Calspan's Flight Research Training Center in Niagara Falls, test pilots believe the work they're doing can arm pilots with the real-world experience to help prevent air disasters, and possibly save lives.

Calspan Flight Research Manager Bruce Magoon said, "The training we provide is very valuable. I would think that it would able to do that, yes."

It's all about awareness in the sky, not a flight simulator on the ground.

Using Learjets, Calspan pilots offer in-flight upset recovery training.

They can literally make a jet feel like any other type of aircraft, big and small.

Calspan Test Pilot Brian Ernisse said, "You'd be amazed at how many commercial have never gone beyond 90 degress of bank."

"Clearly in an upset situation you can far exceed those limits, and the Learjet will go out well beyond those limits."

Using a computer system on board, they can simulate how an aircraft responds to dangerous situations, like icing, stalls or the loss of an engine.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now proposing "special hazard" flight simulator training for pilots, not the real-world in-flight training that Calspan offers.

Ernisse said, "There's no seat of the pants feeling; no life or death feeling that you might get from flying or facing the ground."
